Kuwait urges world to meet poor nations'' challenges

KUWAIT, Sept 26 (KUNA) -- Kuwait called on the international community to take swift and decisive moves to meet fresh challenges impeding development efforts in developing and poor countries.
The call was made by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah in his address at the 63rd UN General Assembly session.
He stressed the importance of concerted international efforts for meeting the challenges and risks of high food and oil prices, climate change, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and human rights violations.
He also called for UN reforms, mainly an increase in the number of UN Security Council members in line with balanced criteria and transparency.
Kuwait always seeks to buttress reform plans for regional and international organizations, he said, citing HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's address in an international conference in Qatar in 2005.
Locally, the premier said Kuwait had made much headway for improving the quality of Kuwaiti people's lives, including education and health, and reinforcing women's role in the society.
Kuwait has taken a series of steps aiming to develop Kuwait into a regional financial and trade center, and has adopted several pieces of legislation involving financial and investment aspects such as the opening of some foreign bank branches in Kuwait, he added.
Humanitarianly, the premier said Kuwait had spared no effort to continue with the extension of development aid to various world countries in line with Kuwait's foreign policy since the early sixties.
HH the Amir initiated a fund for decent life in Muslim nations with a donation of one hundred million US dollars during an international Islamic economic forum in Kuwait in April; aiming to provide basic food commodities for the needy.
Since it was established in 1961, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development has extended a total of 744 loans worth KD 4.82 billion to over one hundred countries. (end) adf.khd.mt KUNA 261606 Sep 08NNNN
